Muslim Global News:

US officials visit Gaza
whats-left-to-cut
In what is certainly a hopeful turn of events, Senator John Kerry and Reps Keith Ellison and Brian Baird visited Gaza last week, the first US government officials to do so in more than three years. The three were by all accounts absolutely shocked by the devastation that they witnessed, and Reps Ellison and Baird, at least, have issued very strong statements. Rep. Baird’s statement is printed below.
He writes, for instance: “what went on here, and what is continuing to go on, is shocking and troubling beyond words.”
In an extraordinary interview with the BBC [LISTEN TO IT HERE | BBC], Rep. Ellison describes his impression in terms strongly critical of Israel, reporting:
“Devastation. Devastation and destruction of facilities that to my mind were not legitimate military targets in any sense of the term, for example the American International School of Gaza was hit, and it is not in a crowded densely packed area, it is kind of out in the middle of a field almost, and it is hard to see how it represented any sort of threat to anyone.”

These are all very hopeful signs. The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation has put out an action alert asking (among other things) for people to thank Kerry, Baird and Ellison. [Article | EndTheOccupation.org]

Safar 22 – You are 16, 25, 30, 54, 62 Are you ready to meet Allah + Calamities, why they befall us + Dedication: Family of Kamran Ahmed

Host: Omar (Mafro)

Quran:

Surat Al-Mulk (surah 67) [FlashQuran.com]

Discussion:

Are You Ready to Meet Allah? & Why Calamities Befall Us? Intro Nasheed

The wisdom of Allah concerning not only calamities, but all things around us that we see and don’t see are reserved in the knowledge of the ghrayb (unseen) that only Allah has knowledge of, and that we cannot comprehend in its entirety. Allah does explain things to us through the Holy Quran, and the Sunnah of his blessed prophet Mohammed peace be upon him. Concerning the wisdom of why there is so much pain and suffering in the world, and why calamities befall innocent people, for seemingly no reason, Allah explains to us a few things. Calamities befall us for many reasons, and I will touch upon two of them for now. Namely,

1. Calamities befall us directly as a test, as a reminder, and in a show of Allah’s utmost Mercy, as a means of cleansing our sins. As a means of erasing our bad deeds. The prophet peace be upon him said: “all the affairs of a believer are good. If blessings is bestowed upon them they are grateful, and that is best for them. And if calamity befalls them they are patient. And that is best for them.” He says in another place: “The believing man or woman continues to have affliction in person, property and children so that they may finally meet Allah, free from sin.” (Tirmidhi). He Also, said: “No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn.” (Bukhari). Regarding the tests, Allah says {Do people think that they will be left to say “We believe” and that they will not be tested? We did test those before them and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.} (29:2-3)
Allah also says: {Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil); but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere.} (2:155)
Allah’s messenger tells us about what Allah has said regarding the loss of a loved one: “I have no reward other than paradise for a believing slave of mine who remains patient for My sake when I take away his beloved one from among the inhabitants of the world.” (Bukhari)

2. Calamities befall others and are made knows to us so that we may heed Allah’s warnings. They come as a reminder to us so that if we are far off of the path towards Allah that we hasten to get back on track in the right direction, with the right focus on Allah and his beautiful, perfect religion. Allah says in this regard: {We have made some of you as a trial for others: will ye have patience? For Allah is One Who sees (all things).} (25:20)

The last point is where I want to remind myself and our listeners about not loosing opertunities. We really should not waste such oppertunities that Allah provides us with as reminders, less we become the reminder to other at a time when we are not ready to be.

Ottawa conference on Imam Tahawi’s “al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyya” was excellent! By Yahya Abdul Rahman

My wife and I had the opportunity to attend a weekend conference on February 14-15 at Ottawa’s Carleton University in which a brief study of Imam Tahawi’s “al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyya” was presented. This classical manual, venerated by Muslims scholars and their students for centuries for its accuracy and clarity, outlines in a concise format the basic tenants of the Islamic faith. The two scholars discussing the text were Shaykh Faraz Rabbani and Shaykh Omar Subedar, both hailing from Toronto.

I have to say that rarely have I attended an Islamic teaching session that has exhibited such high levels of professionalism and scholarship. Every single moment was jammed packed with information which further illuminated Imam Tahawi’s book for my wife and I.

Safar 15 – Islamic Black History

Host: Ahmed Khalil

Discussion:

As the title of today’s show suggests we’re going to talk about black history from an Islamic perspective. Before we delve into this we need to think about if this is something that merits a Muslim perspective. The reality is that not only did Islam teach us about equality of all human beings regardless of their colour, which would be merit enough to give this topic some dedicated air time. But also, unfortunately racism and prejudice is still very much a Jaahily relic that manifests itself in the attitudes, actions, and words of many Muslims until this day. This of course has nothing to do with what Islam teaches us. In fact the prophet peace be upon him would condone the racist statements that early Muslim converts would utter in reference to the first Muathin of the Muslims who was of East African Decent.
