1.Mac Youth Quest:

MAC YOUTH QUEST is a competition for all you high school youth out there who dare to compete with your peers. It’s an opportunity for you to showcase your talents and skills, and to test and increase your knowledge through a range of competitions. You can join the war of words by taking part in the Poetry/Rap Slam. You can test your knowledge in the Trivia Face-Off. You can display your artistic and creative side in Clash of the Banners, or showcase your movie-making talent in the Short-Film Showdown. There is something here for everyone.

Summer Camps:

– This year will be its 27th year!
– The Muslim Youth of Ottawa, with the help of organizations such as The Ottawa Muslim Association (OMA) , The Muslim Students Association of Ottawa and Carleton Universities, The Islamic Information Center has LONG BAY SUMMER CAMP is one of the longest consecutively running summer camp in North America.
The MYO Summer Camp is designed to provide an Islamic environment for Muslim Youth between the ages of 9 and 16. Insha’Allah, with a combination of dynamic workshops and group activities the camp will attempt to provide a positive and energetic approach in helping our youth to live and build an Islamic identity. Our young members will have a wonderful opportunity to make new friendships and bonds that will last many years beyond the camp.” []

– Always looking for counselors and help.
– Will be its 7th year.
– Unique opportunity for girls as this is one of the only camps exclusively for girls.
– Organized by very hard working sisters. Would have stopped running years ago if it wasn’t for a group of committed sisters who took it upon themselves to fundraise and organize this excellent evening camp.

3. Al Huda Girls Summer: Camp a Blast! by Sister Yumna Rashid
Another successful Al Huda Summer Camp for Girls is over.

For three weeks, girls between the ages of 10 to16 enjoyed a spiritual boost all while making friends and having fun.

Timid at first, the girls soon relaxed as baking, crafts and sports activities filled their days. They heard from special guests who were invited to teach the girls about self-defence, public speaking, survival skills, and self-improvement. Along with horseback riding, the girls also went on trips to the Kanata Splash Wave Pool and Gatineau Park. Talks on Islam, our destiny as Muslims, as well as an examination of our role models, added a humbling dimension to the easy-going atmosphere. Despite the focus on activities, the girls left the camp remembering Allah and the friendships they made for His sake. [Read the full article at | PDF]

Success Tips

This Week’s Tip: Having a Purpose

Weekly Tadhkirah:

Friends of Reminders (tadhkirah)

“A day when the heaven with the clouds will be rent asunder and the angels will be sent down, a grand descent. The Sovereignty on that day will be the True (Sovereignty) belonging to the Beneficent One, and it will be a hard day for disbelievers. On the day when the wrong-doer gnaweth his hands, he will say: Ah, would that I had chosen a way together with the messenger (of Allah)! Alas for me! Ah, would that I had never taken such an one for friend! He verily led me astray from the Reminder after it had reached me. Satan was ever man’s deserter in the hour of need.”  [Qur’an 25:25-29]

Community News:

  1. uOttawa Islamic Awareness Week (Review and interviews)
  2. At all levels and niches the Muslim community in Ottawa are taking things to the next level. Last week I visited the uOttawa Muslim Student Association’s Islam Awareness Week. Very impressive indeed. With all volunteers in matching T-shirts, a common theme at each of the dozen or so booths, and the use of huge LCD and Plasma TVs and Monitors to display interactive material, I felt proud to be an Alumni of this very MSA. I spoke with some of the brothers and sisters who were volunteering throughout the week, and with some passers-by about their impressions. First I sat down with Br. Muhamed El-Halawanni, the MSa President who told us about the MSA and what they do: The standards were set high for this IAW. You could see it in the way everything, ma-sha’Allah, moved like clock-work. Br. Osama was in charge of making this IAW, he told us about what the aim of the MSA was, and about the steps they took to make things happen, by the will of Allah.Sister Idil Abdulkadir was responsible for one of the booths at this IAW. She explained what it was like for her, and shared with us some of her experiences for the week.Brother Mohammed Al-Shammari was new at volunteering with the MSA at IAW. He explained what he found very interesting about the interest of non-Muslims with this event.
I spoke with mike how spent some time at this IAW browsing the various displays and speaking with the volunteers. He seemed very impress. He shared with us what his impressions were and what he learned for last week’s event.Sister Lisa, a convert of one year, wrote a number of poems and presented them at this IAW. This is her poem called “Faith”

  3. Qabeelat Ansar and Al Maghrib events: FATWA NIGHT (Interviews)
  4. The Unifying Belief A Study of Imam Tahawi’s al-‘Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah
A classical manual of Islamic belief explained was held this past      February. One review states:

“The Unifying Belief — 2009 was an informative and timely workshop organized in Ottawa. The scholars were well versed in Islamic Sciences and offered the mainstream knowledge of Creed. The scholars did full justice towards explaining Imam Tahawi’s (R. A.) text with wisdom. The young volunteers of Seekers of Virtue worked tirelessly in bringing this event together. May Allah T’aala give them the choicest Ajr, Amin! I look forward to more such events in Ottawa.” – Workshop attendee
