Muharram 9 – Call-in: How are you helping Gaza? + Is boycotting worth it? + Fasting the 10th of Muharram + OC Transpo action

HOST: Omar (GreenKufi)

Dua:

By Mishari Rashid Al-Efasy

Discussion:

What’s going on in Gaza? On the ground: years fo death and sorrow.

Is Boycotting Israeli Products and Services Useful?

Oh, Yes! See this Link to find out real world numbers of how boycotting Israel is hurting them where it hurts Zionists the Most.

Sister Sukeina of Innovative Minds gave a short talk on the Boycott Campaign at a Muslim youth programme. She covers some of the points mentioned above. http://www.inminds.co.uk

An appeal from one of our dedicated listeners: “Israel is displaying its MADNESS with this massacre. The death of our brothers and sisters have been reduced to a number. A number that continues to increase far too quickly. These are not cheap lives.    My daughter sleeps soundly in the next room. If she makes a sound I run to her side to make sure she’s ok. My husband’s late from work, and I’ve already called him twice to make sure he’s ok. My family lives in another  city, I call them almost every day to make sure they’re all ok. The deep love I have for them is the same limitless, undying love that our Palestinian brothers and sisters have for their family members who are DEAD or DIEING or forever WOUNDED.

Can you imagine the orphans? Can you imagine the frustration? The horror? The pain? The agony? The Anger? The sadness that looms…

If you cannot donate money! If you cannot email your local MP to do something! If you cannot attend your local protest! Then at least PLEASE do not buy ISRAELI products!” Click the image for the list ->>

Demonstration on Parliament Hill:Palestine!

Reports from the ground say thousands gathered at the steps of parliament hill January 3, braving the cold with their babies, elderly, women, and children in solidarity with their brethren in Gaza, who are braving much more than the cold. “He can see ground-to-ground missiles,” Says Mr. Shaban, a demonstrator on January 3, about what his friend in Gaza is seeing. “He can see Palestinian civilians lying on the ground dead. There is no place for them in the hospitals. There is no place for the wounded. There are not enough ambulances. There’s no food supplies.

Muharram 2 – Israeli Terrorism in Palestine + Interview with HCI Exec. Dir+Pakistan wants to talk but is fighting in it’s backyard + The Month of Muharram

Hosts: Ahmed (SoloTunes) and Omar (GreenKufi)

Qur’an

Surat at-Tawba Ch.9 V. 1-16

Discussion

The Month of Muharram
The Prophet Mohammed may the peace and blesings of Allah be upon him encouraged his ummah to fast on this day. Abu Qataadah may Allah be pleased with him narrates that the Prophet may the peace and blesings of Allah be upon him was asked regarding the fast of the day of Aashoorah. The Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam replied: “It is a compensation for the (minor) sins of the past year”. (Muslim Vol.1 Page 368)
NOTE:- It must be borne in mind that wherever a promise of forgiveness of sins is made upon the fulfillment of some action, it is only the minor sins that are forgiven. The major sins are not forgiven without true, sincere tawbah (repentance).

One should also observe the fast of the 9th of Muharram to safeguard his deed from resembling the non-muslims who fast and festivate only on the 10th Muharram. Ibne Abbas may Allah be pleased with him said: When Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam observed the fast of the day of Aashoorah and ordered (his Companions) to fast, they said, “O Rasulullah! It is a day revered by the Jews and Christians.” Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “The coming year, if Allah wills, we will fast on the ninth (also)”. (Muslim Vol.1

Israel’s Attacks Against Palestine: A Case of Terrorism and Planned Mass Murder
The attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians were intended to target civilians. It is a simple and obvious case of terrorism.

HCI has been working in Palestine and in Gaza for quite some time and has carried out several relief and development projects.

HCI recently dispatched two trucks loaded with humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip to help besieged Gazans survive the deteriorating living conditions. The trucks crossed King Hussein Bridge carrying basic food items.

As you will note from the HCI outreach campaign [Besieged Gaza Strip HCI | Word Document], we are doing our best to help the civilian victims of the current crisis in Gaza. We have already channelled $100,000 and a massive medical aid package worth 1.8 million dollars is on its way to Gaza.HCI Relief

Israel Rejects Truce, Continues With Gaza Terrorism and Murder: An estimated 300 or more Israeli airstrikes against Gaza Strip targets since Saturday have killed more than 360 Palestinians in a campaign meant to undercut Hamas and repress its ability to fire rockets into Israeli territory. Four Israelis have died from dozens of rockets fired by Hamas over the last four days. Israeli military officials said Monday that their target lists have expanded to include the vast support network that the Hamas relies on to stay in power in Gaza. The choice of targets suggests that Israel intends to weaken all the various facets of Hamas rather than just its armed wing. This includes many aide and extensive social services networks Hamas has established to make life a little bit more tollerable for the people of Gaza. “Anything affiliated with Hamas is a legitimate target,” says an Israeli defense spokeswoman.

The territory’s uniformed police have taken major hits, with several police compounds destroyed. The police force is tasked with keeping peace and order internally, not attacking Israel. But the Israeli military has said the police are fair game because they are armed members of Hamas’s security structure.

It seems as though the targetting of innocent civilians is not accidental. According to a former Adviser to Israel’s security service the approach of targetin g civilians to encite hatred towards their elected government is intentional and was planned. “Hamas’s civilian infrastructure is a very, very sensitive target. If you want to put pressure on them, this is how,” said Matti Steinberg, a former top adviser to Israel’s domestic security service.
Israel has not allowed foreign reporters into Gaza since the operation began Saturday.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas blames Hamas for triggering Israel’s deadly raids on Gaza, by not extending a six-month truce with the Jewish state. He also blamed Hamas, which controls the coastal Gaza Strip territory, for disrupting national unity talks that could have paved the way for general and presidential elections. [sources: washingtonpost | AlJazeera]

Pakistan urges new India dialogue: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also urged India to move some troops and air bases away from joint border areas to send a “positive signal”.
India blames Pakistan-based militants for the attacks in Mumbai that left more than 170 people dead. Yet, Delhi denies making any significant troop movements towards the border.

In other Pakistani news, Pakistan suspended supplies through the Khyber Pass to US and Nato forces in neighbouring Afghanistan as security forces launch a major offensive against suspected pro-Taliban fighters. Pakistan has sent tanks, helicopter gunships and artillery units into the region of Jamrud.

Hasina wins by landslide in Bangladesh:
Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to power after her Secular Party posted a landslide win in national elections today.

Omar Abdullah set to be the new Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister: It seems certain that Omar Abdullah of the National Conference will be the new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. All set to become the youngest Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah favours the continuation of the peace process in the state.

Violence and Mayhem in Gaza at the Hands of the “State” Terrorism of the Israeli Government – What you can do!

What you can do for the innocent people dieing at the hands of Israeli terrorism:

The PCC is working on developing an action plan. They have been in contact with many organizations and groups across the nation. They are counting on your participation, and involvement to succeed in making an impact.

Here are the highlights of the PCC action plan:

1) A national wide campaign to express our concerns and condemnation as well as demand from the Canadian Government to take positive actions. This include:
a. Letter campaign: (see letter template below) send a letter to the Prime Minsters’ office, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and your MP. Letter sample and contacts information are provided below.

b. Phone campaign: Call the office of the PM, Foreign Affairs and your PM to express your concerns. Use some of the talking points and what is called for in the attachment.

c. Online campaign: Look for news articles covering the Gaza attacks in the Canadian media outlets (cbc.ca, theglobeandmail.com, nationalpost.com, etc.). If provided, provide your comments on the article and demand actions from our Government. (Recommend positive comments submitted by others). Otherwise send an email to the editor.

2) Call for participation in local demonstrations, vigils and other activities arranged by various local organizations. Get in touch with your local organizations and groups. Here are some activities planned for tomorrow Sunday Dec 28th:
a. Toronto: a demonstration @ 2pm on 180 Bloor Street West. For details contact Palestine House at 905-275-3622; or Dr Farid at 416-473-1189.

b. Ottawa: a vigil @ 1pm, Human Rights Monument on Elgin Street and Lisgar. For details contact APAC; Dr Habib Khoury at 613-862-5435 or Dr. Hussein Elastal at 613-818-1123

c. Montreal: a demonstration @ 1pm on Guy & de Maisonneuve. or details contact SPHR.org and CPFQ.org

3) PCC to follow up next week to request a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs office. Capitalizing on the our community participation in the national campaign, the PCC with coordination with other groups will demand from our government to call for immediate cease-fire, lifting the siege and to provide the humanitarian aids.

The action plan’s success factors:

Synchronized message (rational, short, clear demands) to be more effective.
Act now, participate in the national wide campaign.
Spread out the word to your networks of Arabs, Muslims, and other supporting fellow Canadians.

Thanks for your support.

Aiman Abou-Shakra

President

Palestinian Canadian Congress

Template letter (see another variation below)

Dear Mr. Prime Minister and Mr. Minister of Foreign Affairs,

The violence in Gaza must stop. Canada must call for an immediate and
unconditional ceasefire. Canada must also call for a cessation of the
ongoing Israeli siege of Gaza, which has resulted in the collective
punishment of the entire Gaza population. According to “2008 Report:
Democracy Charade Undermines Rights” by Human Rights Watch:

“Israel’s blockade of Gaza denies 1.4 million residents the food, fuel
and medicine they need to survive, a collective punishment that
violates international law.”

Just as you said, Mr. Prime Minister, “It’s Canada’s job to help end
oppression and intolerance around the world.” I hope that you take
this job seriously. I hope you stop “staunchly” supporting illegal
Israeli settlements. Stop supporting the illegal collective punishment
of innocent civilians.

I demand that just as we have boycotted Hamas for its illegal behavior
of shooting Qassam rockets into Israel (which since 2001 have killed
13 Israeli citizens, and which are mostly directed at illegal
settlements)… just as we have boycotted Hamas, so too we must
boycott Israel for its continuous violations of international law.

Being a “staunch ally” of Israel contradicts the statement that we
must end oppression, and only shows our double standards when it comes
to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Finally, Canada must aggressively address the root cause of the
violence: Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory.

Sincerely,

To my elected official;

I am writing to express my concern as a Canadian watching the massacre of Gaza. Over 345 Palestinians have been killed and 1,550 injured in Israeli raids, yet we stand by as idle pawns.

Why are we allowing Israel to breed and facilitate terrorism by killing Palestinians? As the Palestinian death toll rises, more Palestinians and citizens of neighboring countries will grow to hate, and be vengeful towards the Israelis. As more anger and frustration is built, the number of extremists will grow. We cannot allow more violence, we cannot allow a reason for extreme measures, and we cannot allow our country to become a silent partner in breeding terrorists.

As a Canadian and citizen of a country that prides itself on justice, freedom and democracy, I urge you to take a stand in ending the rise of extremism, and not stand in silence as hundreds of innocent people are killed. I urge you to call on an immediate cease-fire and to demand free access for international humanitarian organizations, which Israel has blocked.

“In the end, we will remember not the word of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Celebrity Shoe
No, I’m not beating a dead horse to death with a stick. I’m beating a dead, lame duck to death with a shoe. Last week we shoed showed you the video where the Iraqi Journalist Muntadhir Al-Zaidi threw his shoes at the soon to retire president of the US.
Now, you probably have also heard about all the action that’s being taken to free this guy from custody, since many argue he only did what everyone in the US and the rest of the world wanted to do. We’ll here’s an idea… in solidarity with Muntadhir Al-Zaidi this facebook group has an interesting idea. They are encouraging people, who wished they could do what Al-Zaidi did,to send a pair of their old shoes to the basting duck. They even include the address. Unfortunately there may not be enough time to reach him in time for the holiday and his boot from office.

Poem
From one of our listeners and visitors of Slam Ottawa, [viewfromsaudi.blogspot.com] comes a beautiful poem about the journey of a lifetime.

Bags packed,
Delivered.
One for below my arm as I prepare for this journey,
Journeying to places of utmost significance,
for me, billions,
Symbols of Piety, Faith.
Inward journey,
Not sure what I’ll find —
But it must and should be sabr —
Patience.
Looking at your heart,
the mirror is one’s actions
in the crowds,
sweaty, agitated, rushed & euphoric
Desperate, grateful, hopeful
Scared.
Fearful.
Humble.
I am but a tiny speck and yet my faults loom large
as I prepare to journey
to the centre of the world
to face my heart
and make it shine.

Your Moment of Zen “Alhamdulillah for Islam!”

You probably have heard of last years top videos where the blonde “US Amaerican” Miss South Carolina 2007 “everywhere like such as and” made a mockery of herself on live television. Now, as Muslims we do not discriminate against any one group based on their ethnicity, religion, race, or the colour of their hair. So, I do not condone anyone who makes fun of blondes and generalizes that they are all “dumb”. It’s just not True. BUT! Recent evidence does show us that Miss South Carolina suffers from not blondeness, but form sever post Pageant Brain Fatigue Syndrome and it affects most women who participate in pageants. In a more recent case, it seems to have affected another Pageant participant; Miss Pakistan, Natasha Paracha. She recently, with all cool and calm, condoned the Mumbai Attacks in an interview with Anna Coren.

Now, just in case any other pageant participants may be reading this post, allow me to edumacate you please:

con·done [kuhn-dohn] : to regard or treat (something bad or blameworthy) as acceptable, forgivable, or harmless.
1. to disregard or overlook (something illegal, objectionable, etc).
2. to pardon or forgive (an offense); excuse.

Poor Pakistan. Your self-proclaimed ambassador may be causing more tensions than easing them. She wants all Pakistanis to condone these attacks. It also seems like whatever it is that Natasha has may have infected Anna Coren, since she made no attempt to correct her guest, or at least inquire about her views and her call to Her Nation to condone these attacks. “On a Global Sphere”.

Dthul-Hijja 18 – OC Transpo Strike + Reality of Christmas + Michael Jackson Converts to Islam

Host: Mafro (GreenKufi)

Discussion

The OC Transpo strike is in its seventh day now and there has been a lot of grief building up in the city. Many are finding extremely difficult to get to work, school, or the places they volunteer at. Especially those who rely heavily on the public transportation system to get around.

I spoke with one individual who was concerned about loosing her job because she couldn’t make it to work. There is a bit of recompense in these difficult times. There are many people who are resorting to carpooling in an effort to get to the places they need to be. This opens up a great opportunity to connect with the community and an excellent chance for Dawah, as one brother points out.
“You have asked Allah to give you an opportunity to make dawah to your non-Muslim neighbors and friends with a view to showing them the true Islam, and now the opportunity has fallen on your lap. Consider offering a ride to work to someone you don’t know during the current transit strike.” Says Br. Yahya .
If you are interested you can visit www.ottawacarpool.ca or http://www.ottawaridematch.com.
I might add, even if the strike is over and you find yourself still using your car, perhaps you could consider continuing with carpooling to work, or school, or wherever it is you are driving to.

The AMA (Assunnah Muslims Association) has some exciting news.

The progress of the Islamic Center Project has completed its second phase. The Second Phase Consisted of preparing the land for building, establishing services to the site (e.g., watermain, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, etc) and establishing roads and parking lots.

Alhamdulillah, all these components have been completed and the site is ready to build the Masjid.

You can see the latest photos here. And if you poke around you can find their presentation

We pray that Allah makes it easy to finish building the Masjid.

Please consider donating to get the reward from Allah of a SADAQA JARIYAH…

Unfortunately, a beautiful little forest had to be cut down to create this Masjid.

Michael (now Mikaeel) Jackson Converts to Islam, finally. The now “Malik” of Pop was counseled by David Wharnsby, a Canadian songwriter, and Phillip Bubal, a producer, who have both converted. He took his shahada in the presence of Dawud Wharsnby, Yusuf Islam, and Idris Phillips. Of course we all know that the Shahada is pledging elegance to submitting to Allah’s will and command, and not an elegance to the “Koran”, as many of these reports have mentioned.
Also, It seems as though the law suite against the new convert to Islam has been settled outside of court.Jackson_Niqabi
I wonder if people are going to start saying that men are oppressed in Islam because of (dare I say – [Br.]) Micheal’s antics (or should he be Uncle Michael) of wearing the Niqab? (No, wait, it should be Aunti Mikaeel – yeah – that sounds about right) – {I made a funny}

Moment of Zen “Subhan Allah! That Actually happened”

Has anyone seen this crazy video where an Iraqi Journalist throws his shoes at Bush? This is Crazy. What if he had a weapon!!! How did the Secret service not stop this guy. Wow. That’s all I’m going to say.

Apparently this has stirred a bit of a discussion in the world; with words like “shoegate” and questions like:

“Why did he throw his shoes?” “What does a shoe represent in Arab culture?” “Is a wing tip shoe more of a statement than a sandal?” “Did the reporter throw the shoes he was wearing or do Arabs carry spare shoes with them to throw when they are angry?”
