Are You Ready to Meet Allah? & Why Calamities Befall Us? Intro Nasheed
The wisdom of Allah concerning not only calamities, but all things around us that we see and don’t see are reserved in the knowledge of the ghrayb (unseen) that only Allah has knowledge of, and that we cannot comprehend in its entirety. Allah does explain things to us through the Holy Quran, and the Sunnah of his blessed prophet Mohammed peace be upon him. Concerning the wisdom of why there is so much pain and suffering in the world, and why calamities befall innocent people, for seemingly no reason, Allah explains to us a few things. Calamities befall us for many reasons, and I will touch upon two of them for now. Namely,
1. Calamities befall us directly as a test, as a reminder, and in a show of Allah’s utmost Mercy, as a means of cleansing our sins. As a means of erasing our bad deeds. The prophet peace be upon him said: “all the affairs of a believer are good. If blessings is bestowed upon them they are grateful, and that is best for them. And if calamity befalls them they are patient. And that is best for them.” He says in another place: “The believing man or woman continues to have affliction in person, property and children so that they may finally meet Allah, free from sin.” (Tirmidhi). He Also, said: “No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn.” (Bukhari). Regarding the tests, Allah says {Do people think that they will be left to say “We believe” and that they will not be tested? We did test those before them and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.} (29:2-3)
Allah also says: {Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil); but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere.} (2:155)
Allah’s messenger tells us about what Allah has said regarding the loss of a loved one: “I have no reward other than paradise for a believing slave of mine who remains patient for My sake when I take away his beloved one from among the inhabitants of the world.” (Bukhari)
2. Calamities befall others and are made knows to us so that we may heed Allah’s warnings. They come as a reminder to us so that if we are far off of the path towards Allah that we hasten to get back on track in the right direction, with the right focus on Allah and his beautiful, perfect religion. Allah says in this regard: {We have made some of you as a trial for others: will ye have patience? For Allah is One Who sees (all things).} (25:20)
The last point is where I want to remind myself and our listeners about not loosing opertunities. We really should not waste such oppertunities that Allah provides us with as reminders, less we become the reminder to other at a time when we are not ready to be.

Ottawa conference on Imam Tahawi’s “al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyya” was excellent! By Yahya Abdul Rahman
My wife and I had the opportunity to attend a weekend conference on February 14-15 at Ottawa’s Carleton University in which a brief study of Imam Tahawi’s “al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyya” was presented. This classical manual, venerated by Muslims scholars and their students for centuries for its accuracy and clarity, outlines in a concise format the basic tenants of the Islamic faith. The two scholars discussing the text were Shaykh Faraz Rabbani and Shaykh Omar Subedar, both hailing from Toronto.
I have to say that rarely have I attended an Islamic teaching session that has exhibited such high levels of professionalism and scholarship. Every single moment was jammed packed with information which further illuminated Imam Tahawi’s book for my wife and I.

Muslim US congressman Keith Ellison on Gaza
An interview with Keith Ellison about Gaza really showed me that this man doesn’t only stand for good values, but is also very wise and intelligent in going about his cause. Keep it up bro. We are short not on politicians, but on intelligent, wise politicians.
Free Gaza Movement to Israel: “We’re coming in on Tuesday!” [full article]
A group of activists under the banner of “Free Gaza Movement” are on their way to Gaza on an emergency mission abord the “SPIRIT OF HUMANITY” ship. They are carrying with them desperately needed doctors, journalists, human rights workers, and members of several European parliaments as well as medical supplies.
A previous attempt to provide such aid by an international ship was violently attacked by the Israeli Occupying Forces. On December 30 Israeli forces purposefully and repeatedly rammed the unarmed ship causing seriouse damage and endangering the lives of the humanitarian air crew.
Fouad Ahidar, a member of the Belgian Parliament sailing to Gaza aboard the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, responded to concerns that Israel may attack the unarmed mercy ship by saying, “I have five children that are very worried about me, but I told them, you can sit on your couch and watch these atrocities on the television, or you can choose to take action to make them stop.”
Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have injured thousands of civilians and killed over 800 people, including scores of women and children.
The United Nations has failed to protect the Palestinian civilian population from Israel’s massive violations of international humanitarian law. Israel has closed off Gaza from the international community and demanded that all foreigners leave. But Huwaida Arraf, an organizer with the Free Gaza Movements, stated that, “We cannot just sit by and wait for Israel to decide to stop the killing and open the borders for relief workers to pick up the pieces. We are coming in. There is an urgent need for this mission as Palestinian civilians in Gaza are being terrorized and slaughtered by Israel, and access to humanitarian relief denied to them. When states and the international bodies responsible for taking action to stop such atrocities chose to be impotent, then we–the citizens of the world–must act. Our common humanity demands nothing less.”
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Take Action! CALL the Israeli Government and let them know that the
SPIRIT OF HUMANITY is coming to Gaza. DEMAND that Israel immediately STOP slaughtering civilians in Gaza and STOP using violence to prevent human rights and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.

Sadaqa Food Bank:
You may have seen advertised on our show and on other local Muslim media the Sadaqa Food Bank that opened up not too long ago. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to discuss it much on previous shows, but it is incredibly important to realize the barakah or blessing that is in this Food Bank. Allah has provided us with a great opportunity to help our brothers and sisters right here at home and this opportunity should not be overlooked.
There was an article in the Muslim Link’s April 2008 issue on the Sadaqa Food Bank that I would like to share with you if you did not get a chance to read it yourself.
New Muslim food bank opens its doors
Big hopes for Ottawa’s first Muslim food bank
By Muhammed Zaman
The launch of a new halal food bank in Ottawa is giving local Muslim families the opportunity to nourish themselves with Islamically permissible pickings all year round, for the very first time.
The Sadaqa Food Bank, the first of its kind in the capital and a project of the Islamic Circle of North America’s relief fund, recently opened its doors in hope of satisfying the nutritional needs of an estimated three thousand local Muslims, of whom only about 200 are being supported by other Ottawa mosques and organizations.
